Zanzibar Residents Call for Establishment of Official Mineral Markets and Auctions

ZANZIBAR, January 10, 2026

Residents of Zanzibar have appealed to the Government, through the Mining Commission, to establish official mineral markets and auction centres in the Isles to enable traders, small-scale miners and investors to conduct mineral business in a transparent, secure and competitive pricing environment.

The appeal was made by members of the public who visited the Mining Commission Pavilion during the ongoing 12th Zanzibar International Trade Fair (ZITF) at Fumba.

They noted that the absence of formal mineral markets and auction platforms has limited their full participation in mineral trading activities.

The residents said that the establishment of such markets would stimulate Zanzibar’s economic growth, create employment opportunities for youth and women, increase household incomes and curb illegal and informal mineral trade.

Through its pavilion, the Mining Commission is showcasing various investment opportunities across the mineral value chain, including mineral exploration, mining, processing, value addition, mineral trading, as well as the supply of goods and services to mining operations.

The 12th Zanzibar International Trade Fair will continue until January 16, 2026, and members of the public have been invited to visit the Mining Commission Pavilion to receive education, professional guidance and explore fast-growing investment opportunities in Tanzania’s mineral sector.
